FOR PARENTS

If you’re looking for help for your teenager

Finding the right person to see your teenager is hard, and getting it wrong is worse. At Confluence, children and adolescents are seen by Dr. Shankar Nandakumar, who is fellowship-trained in child and adolescent psychiatry, with no fixed age limit. Your teenager is assessed by a specialist in exactly this stage of life, not treated as a smaller adult.

Why the specialty matters

Adolescent mental health doesn't look like adult mental health. Depression can show up as irritability or withdrawal, anxiety as school refusal, ADHD as something missed for years. A specialist knows how these present at this age, and how carefully to weigh medication for a young person.

FOR Adults

If the care is for you

Adults are seen by either psychiatrist for a full range of psychiatric care - depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, ADHD and more - with therapy and medication management planned together rather than split between separate providers. It’s the same physician-led standard, whatever brings you in.

Suitability

Who we can help

We often see
  • A teenager whose mood, anxiety or behavior has changed.
  • Depression or anxiety that hasn’t improved.
  • ADHD that’s been missed, or needs proper assessment.
  • An adult wanting therapy and medication together.
  • A family who’d rather use one practice.
We'd talk thoroughly
  • What’s been happening, and for how long.
  • Whether therapy, medication, or both fit best.
  • For a teenager, how you and they want to be involved.

What happens

Your first visit, start to finish

Get in Touch

After you provide a few details, a psychiatrist will call you back, usually within 24 hours, to discuss whether we’re the right fit for you or your teenager.

Comprehensive evaluation

A full assessment from a biological, psychological, social, and developmental angle - which matters especially for a young person. For adolescents, this includes how you as a parent are involved.

A plan matched to age and stage

A therapy, medication, or both, chosen with care and matched to the person in front of us. For teenagers, medication is weighed particularly carefully and never rushed.

Ongoing support

Your psychiatrist tracks progress and adjusts the plan. Because it’s one practice, care can continue smoothly as a young person grows into adulthood.

Questions

What do people ask before they call

Straight answers to the questions we hear most.

  • What ages do you see?

Children and adolescents, and adults of any age. Children and adolescents are seen by Dr. Nandakumar, who is fellowship-trained in child and adolescent psychiatry and provides care without a specific age limit.

  • Who would see my teenager?

Dr. Nandakumar. He is a specialist in child and adolescent psychiatry and sees young patients for both psychiatry and therapy without a specific age limit. Your teenager is assessed by someone trained specifically for this stage of life rather than treated as a smaller adult.

  • Will my teenager be put on medication?

Not automatically. Medication for a young person is weighed carefully and never rushed. Some teenagers are helped by therapy alone; where medication is right, it’s started cautiously and closely monitored. You’ll be part of that conversation.

  • As a parent, how involved will I be?

That’s discussed at the first appointment and shaped around your teenager’s age and needs. The right level of parental involvement is part of good adolescent care, and we’ll agree it with you.

  • Do you treat ADHD, anxiety and depression?

Yes, across both adolescents and adults - alongside bipolar disorder, OCD, panic and PTSD. Because it’s one practice, overlapping conditions are treated together.

  • Do you take my insurance?

We’re moving to private insurance and credentialing is in progress. Tell us your situation on the call and we’ll tell you where things stand.

  • Can care continue as my child gets older?

Yes. Because the practice treats every age, care can carry on smoothly as a young person moves into adulthood, without starting over somewhere new.
